Turbo 350 kickdown cable install

How about installing a cable when there's no cable already installed? If I understand correctly from what I've read, to replace an existing cable you loosen a bolt that holds the cable housing to the case, then use the cable to pull a small rod up out of the case- then you disconnect the old cable from this rod and connect the new cable.

My question is, can you still get to this rod if there's no existing cable to pull it up with? Can you pull it up with needlenose pliers or something?

I will be installing the cable with trans out of the vehicle. I'm not at all familiar with where the kickdown cable enters the trans case. I can't get a look at this TH I intend to install for a few days yet, but I want to get the parts ordered ahead of time, just wondering if I need to plan on dropping the pan.

Thanks so far for replies. The TCI tranny is a Auto that can be manually shifted, but not a manual only valve body. Your right, only do this with a TH What do I do woth the little rod that sticks out? Bend it in? Should it be pushed in all the way, or pulled out some?
